Slovak poet, playwright, writer, translator, lawyer. Hviezdoslav was one of the leading figures of Slovak literature and Slovak culture at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. With its anti-war theme, Bloody Sonnets was written in 1914 and published first in 1919 in a series of 32 poems. The translator, Jaroslav Vajda (1919-2008), was born in America to Czechoslovak parents. Obrana Press published books of Slovak authors in 1947-1950.
